It's not often that I wax euphoric over a pair of shoes, but then these aren't any ordinary pair, they are Merrell shoes. The great guys at Fitness Footwear sent me a fantastic pair to wear during a charity walk I just completed. The walk was 18 miles around London, and while my legs were aching and my hips were hurting, my feet felt remarkably fine. This is no mean feat (no pun intended), because I have big feet that are sometimes hard to fit, and 18 miles is enough to exacerbate any small problem that might be ok to start with.
This being London, I wanted a pair of shoes that would stand up to the rain but still keep my tootsies cozy and dry. I also wanted the shoes to be on the lighter side and not too bulky or heavy, and finally, I wanted them to look good.
Call me vain, but I am really impressed by how these babies look. They made my feet feel positively *dainty* (relatively speaking - I wear a US size 10, after all). My feet stayed warm and dry, and I especially appreciated the ankle support that you could adjust as needed. I also wore a darn fine pair of sports socks that felt great, although I would only recommend wearing them with the boots if you know it's going to be cold outside, or else your feet will really heat up.
It didn't rain (thankfully), but I did step in a few puddles and nary a drop touched my feet. As for being light, the shoes ticked this box too. I worried that they might be big and clunky and weigh a ton but they turned out to be on the lighter side, for which I was quite grateful, especially on Mile 17.
My only 'heads up' about the shoes is the fact that they are really warm on the inside. The lining is cushioned and really comfortable, but if you wear thick socks and it's not that cold out, your feet are going to get hot pretty quickly. As long as you wear the right socks for the weather, you'll be fine.
