I did a fun road trip round the coast of Suffolk and Norfolk once. It's so close to you, though, you might have already been to all these places. Cromer was a bit grim, but so English and we had some great food (crab and fish and chips, of course - but still, good) Great Yarmouth is lovely, if you haven't already been... and this place was pretty awesome:

I don't know... there are some fun places to stay on that east/north-east coast, I thought. Might be worth investigating.

GO to the Lake Distrct. There wil be lots of B & B's or hotels especially in Ambleside & Hawkshead has the Queens Arms pub which is great.

These are great suggestions - and I agree with all of them. I've been to Warwick Castle and loved it, and want to spend some time in Warwick/Stratford upon Avon for sure. I think it's going to rain there this weekend, which is why we ruled that out.

We did Nottingham two weeks ago and really enjoyed it, more than I expected to. I think we are going to try Bath - forecast is sunny and I've never been. Thanks again for your suggestions -

We did Stratford and Warwick this summer which was nice. Bristol is a fab city with loads to do.

What about Warwick or Stratford? Maybe a little tourist-y, but the latter is definitely a pretty little town. And the former has an incredible castle...

Have you been to Milton Keynes yet? It's a great place to take in some shopping. I used to go there on the weekend when I needed my American shopping fix. It's about an hours drive for you. Or how about Nottingham? I went there for a wedding and wish I had stayed longer. I think it is about a 90 minute drive from Cambridge. I know one thing for sure. I wish I had your problem. ;)

thanks Sarah - great suggestion and I do love York. We are in Cambridge, so it's definitely doable.

I can't remember if I know where you are... so this suggestion may already be on your doorstep and you can just roll your eyes at me and move along to the next comment :)

York: and stay at the Golden Fleece

The Minster Suite is on the top floor and has a view straight down the Shambles.
